2008 Newnes, Baal Bone Gap & Wolgan Valley Christmas

29th & 30th November, 2009

Friday afternoon saw Karl (Nissan) and Graham (Jeep) head down to the property in Wolgan Valley, to ensure all was in readiness for the weekend. A few showers were predicted, however they just put their tents up when the heavens opened and a huge deluge hit the valley.

The creek through the property, which is normally a trickle, turned into a raging torrent washing some of the sleepers across the creek away, making it a bit more exciting getting in to the property.

Michael, Renee and Laura were next to arrive and were extremely pleased that they had “booked” a room in the cabin, and didn’t have to set up a tent in the rain

Last of the Friday night arrivals were Steph and Karen (Nissan), Bill and Olga (Toyota 4WD and Trailer), and Erin in his immaculate 4WD Ute. They arrived in pitch darkness, having had to cross a couple of swollen creeks and avoid trees across the track. Fortunately the rain had stopped and they could set up tents in relative comfort.

Saturday morning was a complete contrast to the night before with the sun glistening off the cliff face. Graham left the camp to join up with the rest of the members at Wallerawang. Led by Wayne, the group, consisting of Wayne and Bette, Paul and Margaret and Pam, Carolyn and Lorraine, who had planned to enter Wolgan Valley via the Garden of Stone National Park and Bale Bone Gap.

As has been reported in earlier trip reports, this is an excellent drive through a beautiful part of the country, more so for the first timers.
We arrived at the property in nice time as Steph had just retrieved the missing sleepers and repaired the crossing.

A very nice lunch of salad sandwiches was next on the agenda. After lunch the remaining tents were set up while others explored the area. Late afternoon saw Wayne and crew start getting organised for our beautiful baked Christmas dinner, cooked in one of Wayne’s “44 gallon drum” ovens.

Our November meeting was conducted with the wonderful aroma of our baked meal filling the air. Following the meeting there were informal discussions regarding the Cape Trip for catering, assets and itinerary. Karl also took the opportunity to go over the trip details with Bill, a visitor for the weekend and a seasoned 4WD driver who has been to the Cape previously and Karl managed to gain some valuable information and tips.

Evening saw us partake of a superb baked meal, Kris Kringle presents and a long chat around the fire. A great end to a beautiful day

One of the Locals

Sunday was another fine day starting with a huge breakfast including “bubble and squeak”, bacon, eggs, sausages, and tomato followed by seasoned prawns courtesy of Steph. Such a large breakfast made for a very lazy morning. A very light lunch and everyone folded their tents, cleared the site and headed for home. Another successful weekend.
